With this work, Claudia Hart implements a still life, the classical form of a memento mori, to contemplate the decay of western civilization. For this series of "Hermitage" works, Hart appropriated a photograph taken in the Hermitage during the World-War-2 blockade of Leningrad. This photograph documents the main exhibition hall, filled with empty picture frames because the masterpieces of the Hermitage collection had been removed, to be safely hidden in advance of pillaging by an invading Nazi army. Hart uses elements portrayed in this photo to compose a series of still lives symbolizing the significance of the NFT during this era of political and cultural instability.
