Medieval prayer books were an intimate form of solace, a devotional device for solitary contemplation. Eidolon attempts to instill a similar sacred quality between the viewer and their handsets.
The immolating violence of the flames is exalted by the beauty of the image itself recalling ‘the sublime’ depicted in representations of the martyrdom of Christian saints. Like the paintings of the Holy Martyrs, Collishaw seem to be tied to an aesthetic based on the an encounter between the lust of the flesh and the brutality of torture, an opposition similar to that of eros and thanatos that creates in the viewer mixed feelings while giving the work a quasi mystical aura.
